THE Conservation Regulator is seeking information from the public after a native wood duck was found at the Mildura Marina with an arrow through its body last Saturday.

Wildlife rescuers reported the incident to the Conservation Regulator after a member of the public alerted them to the injured bird.

The duck was taken to a veterinarian for assessment and while X-rays showed no vital organs had been hit, during the operation to remove the arrow the duck haemorrhaged and died.

The Conservation Regulator is urging anyone with information about this incident to report it confidentially to Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

All wildlife, including wood ducks, are protected in Victoria under the Wildlife Act 1975 and it is illegal to hunt, take, destroy, injure, or interfere with wildlife and severe penalties apply.

The maximum penalty for hunting, taking, or destroying wildlife ranges from $9246 to $44,380 and/or six to 24 months’ imprisonment.

The maximum penalty for an act of aggravated cruelty on any animal is $92,460 and/or 24 months’ imprisonment.
