Ex-Swans midfielder McGlynn backs Salvos meals program

FORMER Sydney Swans midfield star Ben McGlynn has kicked the footy with guests at one of the Sunraysia Salvation Army's free weekly meals.

The Salvation Army hosts a free dinner in Red Cliffs every Wednesdays and a lunch in Mildura on Thursdays, both funded by the Red Shield Appeal.

More than 300 healthy meals are provided each month.

McGlynn attended Red Cliffs' Wednesday dinner, spending time with the local community.

"Ben is passionate about ensuring the needs of the community are met and is supportive of The Salvation Army as we provide for those who are in need through meals, as well as the ongoing assistance through our Community Support Services," Major Debbie Serojales said.

"He enjoyed kicking around the footy and giving some basic tips to those who came along.

"It was also a good experience for him to sit and chat over a meal with members of the local area."

Ms Serojales said McGlynn was supportive of the Salvation Army's current fundraising initiative.

"Ben is keen to encourage people, especially businesses who can get behind the Red Shield Appeal, so we can continue to help families and individuals who are going through difficult times at the moment," she said.

From May 15 to 27, the Salvation Army is collecting for the Red Shield Appeal, with all funds raised locally to stay local to assist ongoing community work.

Ms Serojales said more than 100 people come through the Salvation Army doors every week at the Community Support Services.

"The Red Shield also funds our Christmas Day lunch where we have 150+ members of our community, plus Christmas Gift giving and Back to School assistance just to name a few," she said.
