How to help the Salvos help those most in need

THE Salvation Army has set a goal of raising $30,000 in Sunraysia for this year's 59th Red Shield Appeal, and has asked for the community's support.

The charity contributes significantly to the region, supporting over 100 people a week and upplying over 300 meals a month, as well as running programs such as Christmas gift giving and back-to-school assistance.

Sunraysia Salvation Army's Major Debbie Serojales said community members and volunteers could get involved in the Red Shield Appeal through community collection points, online fundraising, or by organising events at their workplace, school or sporting event.

“If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, now is the time, grab your friends, your workmates, or make it a family outing or a group activity for your club – just get involved. The community needs your support more than ever,” she said.

Maj Serojales said the Salvos had seen "more and more people living below the breadline".

"While all Australians are feeling the pinch of the cost of living pressures, it’s more extreme for some, we are seeing people skipping meals, going without prescribed medications, struggling to keep the lights on," she said.

“We don’t want anybody to struggle alone – times are tough, but we can get through it together, with your support."

“This is a very generous and supportive community and we know this year will be no different and that, where possible, people will do what they can to help others.”

The Red Shield Appeal weekend is set for May 20 and 21. There are volunteer opportunities throughout May and the Salvos will be collecting at various locations from May 15-27.

People can also donate directly to The Salvation Army Sunraysia on 5023 1647.
