EXTRA firefighting crews and aircraft are on standby in the Mallee ahead of high fire danger this weekend, as heat, wind and an abundance of fuel present perilous conditions.

Mildura-based Country Fire Authority district commander Mick Sporton yesterday said that higher-than-average rainfall had boosted grass growth to levels not seen for years and that this fuel was now dry and ready to ignite.
