SUNASSIST is urgently searching for a local meal provider for its Meals on Wheels service to ensure it can keep operating in the Mildura region.
Executive officer Richard Garlick said Sunassist had been searching since last year for a new business that could supply suitable meals.
"Late October we got a call to say (the previous supplier) couldn’t continue providing the meals," he said.
"We have advertised and put out the tender documents to a number of providers and haven’t found a suitable provider as yet."
Mr Garlick said the previous supplier agreed to stay on until a new one was found, but the organisation needed to find someone soon.
The meals need to be within the guidelines of Meals on Wheels and suitable and affordable for elderly people and those with disabilities.
Mr Garlick said the organisation wanted to continue ensuring they were providing a good quality meal for those that need the service.
"We would love to hear from people who are food providers and can provide a low-cost, two or three course meal for elderly and disabled people," he said.
"We have had a couple of providers that could ship (meals) from Melbourne and Adelaide but that would be unfortunate, because we want to support local business."
Mr Garlick said this year, Sunassist would provide about 28,000 meals to about 250 elderly and disabled people in Sunraysia.
"It is somewhere between 50 to 100 meals per day," he said.
"Some people get it two times a week, some three, but it is close to 80 to 100 meals a day or sometimes it is a little bit lower."
Sunassist, which is funded to provide the service, packs and delivers the meals once they are dropped off by the provider.
Mr Garlick said providers would be paid by Sunassist on a monthly basis.
He said the service, which has been running for over 60 years, was crucial as the delivery was more than just a meal for some.
"It is more than just a meal, it is also about the volunteers having contact," he said.
"For some of them that is the only contact they will have with anyone on a daily basis, so it ensures their safety as well."
