THE level of the flooded Murray on Wednesday morning was holding at Mildura and falling slightly downstream, but a further rise is expected next week.
Authorities have attributed the pause in the river's rise to an upstream levee breach near Euston that diverted large amounts of floodwater into a lake system, but say this respite is likely to be brief.
The Bureau of Meteorolgoy says that "due to levee breach near Euston, the Murray River at Mildura may remain around 38.1 metres AHD until this weekend".
"The river level may rise again and reach 38.3 metres AHD around Wednesday next week."
The bureau says the Mildura level could remain around 38.3 metres AHD until late December, with moderate flooding.
A slight drop in the Murray's height was visibly discernable at various locations on the Mildura riverfront on Wednesday.
