THE Wentworth Sporting Complex Golf Club is now completely inundated after a levee was breached on Sunday, but Wentworth Shire Council has assured residents there is no risk to the town levees.

Video footage shared by Facebook user Photos by Nioka captured the moment floodwaters breached the levee on Sunday evening, resulting in the entire course going under water (see image carousel above).

A spillway in the levee had meant floodwaters were slowly entering the course over the past seven days.

It is the third golf course in the region to be flooded, with Coomealla and Riverside also under water.

The Wentworth course, which last flooded in 1975, still had six holes available for play as recently as Sunday morning.

Wentworth Sporting Complex Golf Club President Glen Walker said the club had decided to remove flags and bins from the course on Sunday, with the help of volunteers.

He said while the club did not expect the levee to breach so soon, it was not a surprise.

“The levee was designed to protect the golf club from minor floods,” Mr Walker said. “But there was a spillway built into it.

“But obviously, the river water’s rising quicker than what the water is filling up the golf course and it busted through the bank last night.

“It wasn't unexpected. We knew the course was going to go under eventually.”

Wentworth Shire Council assured residents the town was not under threat from flooding in a Facebook post on Monday.

The post read: “The golf course is outside the town levee and the Wentworth township is not threatened."

In a further update, Council noted that a 28km stretch of Low Darling Road was now closed between Wills road in Pomona, north to Garston Road.
