Iraak told to evacuate as flood crisis escalates

PEOPLE in the Iraak area were told on Wednesday that if they didn't leave by 8pm, they might be isolated by floodwaters and out of reach of help.

Flooding was expected to affect the riverside irrigation district over 24 to 48 hours from Wednesday afternoon..

Rudds Rd was to be closed due to damage and emergency authorities said there would be no access after 8pm on Wednesday.

People in Iraak were told they should travel to a safe location, such as a family or friends' home away from flooding. Anyone with nowhere safe to stay should contact the Mildura Rural City Council's Flood Recovery Hotline on 1800 560 760. The hotline is open from 7.30am to 7.30pm every day

Up to 8pm Wednesday, the safest evacuation route was by Rudds Rd to Kulkyne Way or via Iraak Lake Rd to Kulkyne Way, then either north on Kulkyne Way or west on Brownport Rd.

People were advised, however, that if they did not evacuate before 8pm, it could then be too late to leave and they could be isolated for a significant period of time and potentially out of reach of emergency services.
