Flood help allowance extended to Mildura

FEDERAL and state government assistance is now available in the Mildura local government area following the flood events across Victoria starting last month.

Mildura, East Gippsland, Hindmarsh, Southern Grampians and Towong municipalities were this week added to eligibility for the Disaster Recovery Allowance.

The Mildura State Emergency Service in October responded to numerous calls for assistance after more than 65mm of rain fell across two days last month, including the wettest October day ever.

Building damage caused by water inundation was reported in Mildura, Merbein, Irymple and Robinvale, while fallen tree limbs were also reported across the region.

Mildura SES said requests for assistance largely related to building damage as a result of water intrusion.

The Commonwealth and Victorian government-funded program provided a range of hardship grants, council clean-up assistance and support for primary producers, such as freight subsidies and concessional loans of up to $250,000.

Federal Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt said the support would help with short-term recovery while the government continued to look at what long-term assistance was needed.

"We are constantly monitoring and assessing this rapidly evolving situation as areas continue to respond and recover," Mr Watt said.

Victorian Emergency Services Minister Jaclyn Symes said the government was being guided by locals when it came to their recovery.

"This funding will make sure flood affected business owners and communities have the support they need to rebuild and return to trade as quickly and safely as possible," she said.
