Digital flood map ‘not accurate’ for NSW

THE digital map being used by many Sunraysia residents to plan their flood response is far from accurate on the New South Wales side of the Murray River, it has been revealed.

The map, used by by Victorian catchment management boards, is accurate only in that state and it now carries a disclaimer to this effect.

"Actual flooding may differ from that shown," the disclaimer reads.

"The detail on the NSW side is not verified and does not take into account detailed information regarding some NSW levees. Inundation on the NSW side of the river may not be indicative of actual impacts."

Both the Murray and Darling rivers are in flood and both are expected to pass major-flood levels before peaking in the coming weeks.

Wentworth Shire Council has been concerned that use of the map had caused needless alarm among many of the NSW municipality's residents and it successfully asked the catchment boards to add the clarifying disclaimer.

There is no suggestion that flood modelling on the Victorian side of the river is inaccurate.

The digital map, created by Water Technology Pty Ltd, can be viewed at Loddon Avoca Mid-Murray Flood Mapping.
