Heater warning after bungalow fire

A BUNGALOW fire at Red Cliffs has prompted a warning from firefighters about using electrical heaters.

Following an investigation, a fire that burnt a bungalow to the ground at Lowan Avenue last Sunday has been deemed non-suspicious.

Mildura Fire Rescue Victoria commander Rob McNally said a person was living in the bungalow, but had left before the blaze broke out.

"It was a small shed that's been turned into a bungalow... a steel construction on the outside but furnished inside," Mr McNally said.

"The furnishings were of a lounge and bedroom nature, so quite combustible."

He said when crews arrived on scene, the home was engulfed in flames and there was very little chance of saving it.

However he said they were able to contain the fire to the bungalow, and prevented it from spreading any further.

The cause has since been determined to be an electrical heater.

"Initially police had been investigating it as possibly being suspicious but once we had our fire investigation team on scene, we quickly established it was most likely connected to a single electric heater.

"It was at the very western wall of the small bungalow, between the lounge and bedroom, which shorted, causing an electrical fire to go through the house."

Mr McNally said given many Sunraysia residents were currently using heaters daily, precautions needed to be taken to ensure a repeat incident did not occur.

"We are experiencing a very cold winter, abnormally cold, so please ensure all smoke detectors and alarm systems are fully operational and all electrical heaters are serviced and in good working order.

"Also, ensure you have no flammable material close to those heaters."
