MILDURA Council has been urged to make a "real effort" to save a historic building that has stood idle and deteriorated over the past decade.

Elstead House is one of the earliest surviving dwellings, having been built in Mildura in the late 19th century on a parcel of land originally owned by Mildura founder William Chaffey.
