SUNRAYSIA residents and anyone crossing the Victorian border are being asked to not approach checkpoints on foot.

Police said there had been several incidents of people bypassing barricades and walking towards oncoming traffic to seek clarification on border closures.

They said the method was dangerous and put the community and police at risk.
