A MILDURA doctor is urging people to phone their GP if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms instead of arriving at medical practices.
Lime Medical Clinic's Dr John Dyson-Berry said in the weeks since implementing a triage screening system, a number of people had come to the clinic and told staff they had no COVID-19 symptoms so they could meet their doctor face-to-face.
COVID-19 symptoms include a fever, breathing difficulties, cough, sore throat, and fatigue or tiredness.
Dr Dyson-Berry said once people made it through the triage screening process it became apparent they did have symptoms of the virus.
"I think it was based on fear they wouldn't be treated," he said.
"(But) people shouldn't be putting their practitioners on the line."
Dr Dyson-Berry said it was "disconcerting" that this type of behaviour had taken place but fortunately things were starting to improve and more patients were willing to use phone and telehealth options to speak to their doctor.
Lime Medical Clinic has a triage system in place to screen its patients so staff can determine whether someone may be at risk of having COVID-19.
The screening process asks patients a number of questions relating to their health and if they have recently travelled overseas or been in contact with anyone who has.
Dr Dyson-Berry said it was important people were honest during the screening process so that staff were not put at risk and could continue to treat patients.
People are urged to phone ahead to their GP or emergency department if they believe they have COVID-19.
People can also contact the dedicated COVID-19 hotline on 1800 675 398.
