Bridge hotel robbery prompts wide search

Originally published January 14, 1989

POLICE were on full alert in an effort to track down two bandits responsible for an armed hold-up at the Bridge Hotel-Motel.

One masked bandit armed with a double-barrel sawn-off shotgun, terrorised the hotel manager before fleeing with about $20,000 of hotel takings.

He escaped in a get-away vehicle, a white late model Mazda or Toyota van, driven by an accomplice.

Armed police from both NSW and Victoria were on the scene within minutes of the robbery, but a wide ground and air search found no trace of the vehicle, or its occupants.

It is believe they have “gone to ground” somewhere in the Buronga, Gol Gol or Boeil Creek area.

At one stage at least 20 uniformed and plain clothes police were involved in the search.

All roads on the NSW side of Sunraysia are under surveillance.

Police appealed to block owners and town residents in the area to watch out for the white van, which might have been abandoned.

Police have also been asked to watch for two people, most likely males, but possibly a male and a female, who appear to be hiding out or acting suspiciously.

Police warned the pair are most likely still armed and dangerous and should not be approached under any circumstances.
