RACING has been suspended indefinitely at Mildura's Timmis Speedway, as the club awaits necessary funding to continue crucial upgrades to the track.

The club announced the news on its Facebook page on Tuesday night, stating it was expected that at least the start of the upcoming racing season would be effected.

President Geoff Fell said that while upgrading the track's fencing, the club found out the power poles and lighting around the track would have to be replaced - an upgrade the club did not think it had to do until a later date.

Mr Fell said the fence had to be raised to 4.8m above the surrounding concrete wall, which obstructed the existing power poles.

"We got speedway Australia involved and they did some tests with the electricity and it turns out that it's obsolete," he said.

"It has to be decommissioned because it is has to be four metres higher and one metre back and it is just all that stuff that we can't (afford to) do."

The club is currently seeking at least $250,000 to complete the necessary upgrades and return to racing.

Mr Fell said the club was "praying" it would receive government funding soon so the upcoming racing season wouldn't be too badly affected.

The club is accepting donations through a GoFundMe web page, which by Wednesday afternoon had raised more than $3000.
