New view of Mildura painter's life of art

AN empty shop in Langtree Mall has been transformed into a treasure cave of local art and history.

Adored Mildura artist Petronella Cavallaro has set up a temporary exhibition and sales space at 57 Langtree Mall and works on show go right back to her beginnings as a professional painter more than four decades ago.

Mrs Cavallaro delighted tour-bus crowds with painting demonstrations in the 1970s and '80s and established her Inn of Art studio before health battles forced to her to wind back to painting and teaching at home.

She is now finding new fans among shoppers who drop in for a look, and maybe to buy one of her pieces. And the 77-year-old is revelling in it.

"It's about meeting people and it's really been fantastic," she said. "It is heartwarming how many people are calling in."

The mall exhibition includes paintings dating back to the mid-1970s that Mrs Cavallaro had not seen herself for many years, as they had been kept in storage.

"I was so happy to see them," she said, adding that while she might be prepared to sell some, a few favourites will stay in her private collection.

Many of the works on show are for sale, however, and sticker prices range from $200 to $3000. Mrs Cavallaro said price could always be negotiated, however, and joked that "you know Italians love to bargain".

The mall exhibition is open from 9.30am to 1.30pm weekdays, but viewings at other times can be made by appointment. Call 0439 514 589 or 5021 1465.
