SUNRAYSIA libraries are again buzzing with life with the return of Storytime.

The first sessions of the year were held this week, with many young children eager to take part.

Library officer Matthew Kinleyside said the program had been offered locally for many decades but, due to COVID-19 restrictions, had been cancelled numerous times over the past two years.

"It's really good to be able to have everyone come back to Storytime," he said.

"We have had a reasonable turnout, which shows it is still really popular and an activity that people are looking to attend."

Baby Bounce, Joey Storytime and Storytime are offered to newborn and older children as an introduction to the library with the aim of beginning a love for literacy.

"Baby Bounce is a program aimed for newborn to one-year-olds and is an introduction to books and rhymes," Mr Kinleyside said.

"It is also an opportunity for children to socialise with others their own age, as well as for parents.

"Often mothers will attend the session and then all have coffee together afterwards.

"Joey Storytime sees the children take part in more activities and Storytime is more focused on the story.

"The programs are really important for not only social development but also literacy development."

Mr Kinleyside said one of the great joys of his role was seeing the excitement of children developing a love for reading.

"Something that is always really nice is watching when a child finds a book they have been looking for and seeing their face light up," he said.

"The library should have something for everyone with books for all reading levels, as well as audio books, e-books and DVDs."

Due to COVID restrictions, Baby Bounce has been suspended but the library was looking at running an alternative program in February.

Various weekly sessions are held at the Mildura, Merbein and Red Cliffs libraries on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
