What to do immediately after a car accident — a stress-free guide for aussie drivers

Being involved in a car accident is never pleasant — whether it’s a minor fender bender or something more serious, the experience can be overwhelming. Knowing what to do in the moments immediately after can make the process much less stressful and help protect your safety, rights, and finances.

1. Check for injuries: Before anything else, check if you or anyone else is hurt. If there are injuries, call emergency services on 000 straight away. Don’t attempt to move anyone who’s injured unless they are in immediate danger.

2. Move to safety: If the accident is minor and it’s safe to do so, move the vehicles off the road to prevent further incidents. Turn on your hazard lights and, if available, use safety triangles or cones to alert other drivers.

3. Exchange information: Get the other driver’s name, address, phone number, vehicle registration, and insurance details. If there are witnesses, ask for their contact details too — their account could be important later.

4. Document the scene: Use your phone to take photos of the damage, road conditions, number plates, and any relevant signage. This will be valuable when filing your claim and protecting your version of events.

5. Report the accident: Depending on the severity and local regulations, you may need to report the incident to police. In Victoria, for example, you must report accidents involving injury or damage over a certain amount.

6. Contact your insurer and arrange repairs: Once you’re safe and have the necessary information, notify your insurer as soon as possible. They’ll guide you through the claims process. From there, choosing a reliable provider of insurance covered smash repairs ensures your car is repaired to a high standard, using quality materials and techniques that meet manufacturer specifications.

Staying calm and following these steps can help take the pressure out of an already stressful situation. With the right information and support, getting back on the road doesn’t have to be complicated.
