What weekly social activities and sports are there available for Sunraysia children?

AFTER a year where kids were kicked off fields, stadiums and tracks due to COVID-19, sporting activities are again returning across Sunraysia.

So what weekly social activities and sports are there available for local children?

Sunraysia Daily reporter TAMARA CLARK gives the rundown on just some of the many options where your kids can escape the nightmare of the 2020 lockdowns and take up a healthy pursuit in 2021.

Ready, Steady, Go is run out of the Mildura Hothouse and teaches children foundational sporting skills in a social and non-competitive setting.

The program teaches kids the basics of athletics, basketball, golf, rugby, T-ball, soccer tennis, hockey, AFL and cricket.

Term 1 in Victoria and New South Wales is running until April 1 and term two begins April 19.

Junior basketball is also run out of the Mildura Hothouse basketball stadium.

The under-eights competition for children born in years 2014, 2015 and 2016 starts Wednesday February 3 and costs $95 for the season.

This includes a $20 singlet deposit which is refunded at the end of the season. Other junior competitions have already started, but check out the Mildura Basketball Association for details.

Little Athletics is on until late March on Sundays from 8.45am. The competition is based at the Mildura District Little Athletics Centre Oval 8, Old Aerodrome Sporting Complex, 537 Eleventh Street. Training takes place on Thursday night between 5.30-7pm.

The Mildura Gymnastics Club at 18 Westcliffs Avenue, Red Cliffs offer classes and coaching for anyone three years old and over. The club holds weekly classes.

Sunraysia netball clubs offer under 11s competitions at clubs including Mildura, South Mildura, Irymple and Wentworth. The netball season begins in April and continues until September.

Rhee Tae Kwon-Do holds children’s classes to teach kids the importance of courtesy, resilience and self-discipline. Training sessions focus on improving fitness, strength and flexibility.

Rhee Tae Kwon-Do says: “In today’s world of safety and electronics, it’s so important to balance school work, and screen time with physical activity and awareness training”.

The program is now run from two four locations across Sunraysia: 75 Latje Road, Robinvale, 17 Fitzroy Avenue, Red Cliffs, 920 Fifteenth Street, Mildura and Karadoc Avenue, Irymple.

The Sunraysia Hockey Association is running two Hookin2Hockey programs this year starting on Wednesday, February 17, and Saturday, February 2.

Hookin2Hockey was created for children under 10 years of age but is open to older children who are new to the sport.

Sessions are centred around making friend and learning field hockey basics.

The Mildura Calisthenics Club welcomes girls from 4 to 104 years of age. The club competes and trains between February and October each year.

Sessions are held at 461-463 Deakin Avenue.

Several Sunraysia AFL clubs are hosting Auskick programs this year for all children between ages five and 12.
