Finery on show at Fashions on the Field

THIS Friday’s 101st running of the bet365 Mildura Cup carnival will once again feature all the fun you’ve come to expect from the event, including the always popular Fashions on the Field competition.

Set for Friday, July 18, the event is more than just finely dressed phillies and strapping colts strutting their finery, as this year there’ll be a special guest host.

Former jockey, racing commentator, and fashion icon Casey Bruce will be lending her support to the event.

Fashions on the Field organiser Maria Robinson said it was coup to get the media personality from Melbourne along for the event.

“We’re really excited to have Casey come and join us,” Ms Robinson said.

“Having her come along and lend her support is just another how, in Mildura, we are with it.”

As for what’s hot this winter, and what experienced and up-and-coming fashionistas could step out in, Ms Robinson said deep reds and warm browns were in style.

“Chocolate brown and burgundy are the colours of this winter season, you see them everywhere in Melbourne,” she said.

“The current style for men is classic suits, with a hat and tie.

“Smile, enjoy your day and remember that everyone’s a winner.”

The categories for this year’s Fashions on the Field are; Lady of the Day, Most Fashionable Lady, Most Fashionable Male, and the Millinery Award.

Lady of the Day will be awarded to an entrant wearing traditional race fashion, while Most Fashionable Lady will go to an entrant wearing current race fashion trends.

As always, the Millinery Award is all about the entrants’ headwear and how it complements the overall outfit, and Most Fashionable Male will focus on hats and ties.

To take part in the Mildura Cup Fashions on the Field all entrants must be 18 years or older and registrations can be made at the race day office, with judging getting underway after race three at 2pm.

There’s more than $4000 in prizes up for grabs, and the stakes are high but Mrs Robinson said there’s something just as important as winning.

“Come along and have a great day of fun,” she said. “I love seeing new people dress up for the Mildura Cup every year.”

The bet365 Mildura Cup carnival includes the Cup on Friday, July 18, as part of an eight race card, while Saturday, Trackside Family Day, has seven events as well as a wide range of activities for everyone.

Gates open from 11am both days and children 17 years old and younger get in free on Saturday.
