Angelone back for round two

VISITING Linton trainer Kylie Vella will be hoping Angelone can continue his unbeaten status in the district in the Vale Gregg Tuohy Handicap when the bet365 Mildura Cup Carnival continues this Saturday with a family fun day.

Angelone had a late start to his racing career as he made his debut at Mildura as a five-year-old, but he made up for lost time with an impressive1.75-length win in October 2022.

Angelone was then placed third and second respectively at Horsham and Donald and has been sparingly raced since then.

“He sprained a tendon and had to have time off. He has come back but is a tricky horse that always runs well first-up and then goes terrible at his next run after that,” Vella said.

“He is a horse that takes a bit of work as he is very temperamental.

“He over-does things but when he puts it together he is a nice horse.”

Angelone returned from a spell with a third placing at Seymour on June 16 and then went to Seymour at his latest outing as one of the favoured runners but failed to fire and finished at the tail of the field.

“We couldn’t find any excuses after the run so it was just another time when he didn’t go well after his fresh run,” Vella said.

Vella said she was hoping Angelone could run at his best on Saturday as they were keen to win the Vale Gregg Tuohy Handicap.

“Gregg was like family to us so the pressure is on to win the race. It will be an emotional win if he does it and will be a big celebration,” Vella said.

Angelone will have plenty of opposition in the race, including Putanothercoinin, who is making the trek to Mildura for the leading SA stable of Richard and Chantelle Jolly.

Putanothercoinin opened up his winning account at Morphettville in November last year and was then placed third at the same track at his next two starts before being sent for a spell.

Putanothercoinin has had two fitness-gathering runs since resuming from a spell and the youngster looks well suited in Saturday’s race, with in-form jockey Brad Rawiller.

Swan Hill trainer Austy Coffey has a four-horse team competing at the meeting, including the last-start winner Olivia’s Scandal in the bet365 Handicap.

Olivia’s Scandal put the writing on the wall for the victory after finishing second at Swan Hill last month, and the four-year-old powered away from her rivals for an impressive win at Warracknabeal last Saturday.

Olivia’s Scandal will be hard to beat again at Mildura on Saturday as she has now gained winning confidence.

Entry to the meeting is by a gold coin donation with proceeds going to a local charity.

This year the Mildura Racing Club has partnered with the Mildura Health Foundation in support of the Dr Julie Zrna Centre.

There will be plenty of free activities for children throughout the day, including pony rides, jumping castles, face painting and a live reptile display be Enviro Edu.

The family fun day will provide for a fun-filled day for the whole family, with live music to entertain patrons along with a wide variety of food stalls operating during the meeting.

The first of seven races on the program will be run at 12.21pm and the interesting runner of the field is Rebel Exe, who will be making her race-track debut for trainer Lindsey Smith.
