EVERY Rotary Christmas Hamper sold this year will help deliver better outcomes for cancer patients travelling to Mildura.
In 2020, the Club released its first Christmas Hampers, stocked with local products, to help local businesses through the struggles of the pandemic.
President Mel Tucker said post-COVID, the project was still going strong.
"It was to initially help out the producers of Sunraysia as they were losing a lot of customers," she said.
"It was a real success. Now we're into our third year ... and so far, we've purchased $35,000 worth of stock from local producers, and we've raised about $20,000 worth from our hampers."
All profits raised from the hampers will go towards an accommodation centre for radiation-therapy patients in Mildura.
The 10-apartment complex, to be built on Thirteenth Street, will be available to both private and public patients who travel to the region for radiation treatment at the Mildura Health Icon Cancer Centre.
Its aim is to provide patients from outlying areas such as Ouyen, Robinvale, Swan Hill, Broken Hill and Renmark easily accessible accommodation, to reduce the financial stress and allow them to focus on their treatment and recovery.
Mildura Health Foundation chair Terry Hill said it was a very worthy cause and he was thankful for the support.
"A lot of people wouldn’t travel out of the district to have treatment because they'd be away from family for too long," he said.
"At a critical time of the treatment, they need all the support they can get."
Ms Tucker said Rotary was more than happy to support the project.
"I think everybody in our community would know somebody who's been diagnosed with cancer and has to travel a long way," she said.
"It’s a big out-of-pocket cost."
Ms Tucker encouraged any locals and businesses looking for Christmas gifts to consider the hampers.
