Junior pennant reaches final

MURRAY Darling Golf Association Junior Pennant will reach its conclusion on Sunday at Riverside Golf Club.

Seven teams of young golfers took part in the first series in over a decade, with a tremendous response being made to the competition encouraging youngsters to take to the courses of Sunraysia.

MDGA president Garth Doherty said the reception for the competition has been well beyond all expectations.

“It’s been really well received, there’s been lots of excitement from the kids and parents, clubs, team managers and even spectators who have come out for a look on Sundays,” he said. “It’s a great sign for the future.

“It was a possibility that we started with two grades such was the response, in the end we went for one grade but certainly next year we’ll look at adding another.

“It’s been all about inclusivity but now we get to the pointy end where there’s some really good kids with low handicaps in action.”

Following five rounds over the past six weeks, Red Cliffs finished on top of the ladder and will face Coomealla Navy on Sunday for the pennant title.

Also on Sunday Merbein will tackle Riverside Green in a third-place play-off.

Tee off begins at 9am Sunday, with the pennant match to begin from 9.30am.
