Junior pennant back with a whack

FOR the first time in more than a decade Murray Darling Golf Association Junior Pennant was back on Sunday.

Six teams teed off in the new era for local golf with a strong crowd in attendance to witness the skill of the next generation of pennant players.

Mildura won over Riverside Gold to take top spot after the opening round, while Riverside Green defeated Coomealla Navy, and Merbein and Red Cliffs played out a tied contest.

Riverside Gold and Mildura fought out a close battle, but it was the latter that came away with the 3-2 win.

A great performance with a 1-up win for Lacie Coffey helping her side over the line. Will Anderson and James Robinson had some strong performances, while Cooper Palazzo and Charlie Vince earned wins for Riverside.

In the battle of the teams with the lowest handicaps, Riverside Green got across the line against Coomealla Navy 3-2 in a great contest.

Steph Baker, Cooper Mitchell and Lachlan Smith all picked up wins for the victors, while Shaun Hollingworth and Sam Longeri won their contests for Coomealla.

A thrilling tie in the final match between Oscar Finch and Max Hollingworth saw Red Cliffs and Merbein share the points at 2.5-all.

That followed earlier wins for Reuben Shirnack and Charlie Goldup for Red Cliffs, and Lucy Batchelor and Chase Faux for Merbein.

Round 2 action heads to Red Cliffs Golf Club on Sunday, with Coomealla White, who had the first round bye, playing their first match when they come up against Merbein.

Meanwhile, Mildura face Coomealla Navy, and the home club Red Cliffs tackle Riverside Gold.

Riverside Green will have the bye.
