Tee-rific beginners on course for greatness

A GROUP of experienced and beginner golfers hit the links on Sunday for a celebrity tournament.

Anne Bowen organised the event to recognise the efforts of women who had only begun playing in late February.

“Quite a few had no idea when they started, but I believe anyone can learn,” she said.

“A lot of them are at an age where their kids have moved, they have reduced their days of work and they have a bit of me time now.

“It’s been a big thing for them to decide they’re going to do something for themselves, but they belong here as much as anyone else does.

“I’ve gotten such great feedback from their families about how thrilled they are that these girls are enjoying themselves.

“And the people at the club have just been fantastic, offering practice balls or an old set of clubs for them to try out before they were ready to buy their own.

“It’s been a most joyful year.”

Playing an Ambrose format, local celebrities at the event included newly appointed Mildura Rural City Council Mayor Cr Helen Healy, although Ms Bowen said the real celebrities were all of the people gathered.

“Every one of these women has a multitude of talents,” she said.

“They all have a remarkable story to tell.”

While golf may have been seen as a traditionally male-dominated sport, Ms Bowen said the perspective has been changing.

“One of Australia’s best sports people is Kari Webb, her record is outstanding,” she said.

“There’s more girls coming on, and even on golf sports shows a real effort has been made to have women as presenters.

“Women are beginning to feel that this is something they can do.”
