Coomealla’s pennant three-peat

A THIRD consecutive Murray Darling Golf Association women’s pennant flag has been taken back to Coomealla Golf Club.

After the club entered two teams in this year’s competition, it was Coomealla White who earned victory over Red Cliffs in Sunday’s final on their opponent’s home course.

The two teams actually faced each other the previous week in the final match-up of the regular rounds, when they shared the points to set up an intriguing final.

It was just as tight on the final day with two contests going to the 19th hole and the biggest margin being just 2-up in a brilliant contest.

Games went down to the wire as Suellen Nunan and Nia Whittle both finished their respective contests with Sue Gathercole and Julianne Wood all square, forcing play-off holes.

They would both go on to win on the 19th, crucial results in the context of the final.

Erin Nunan’s battle with Deb Dark also went the distance, for a 1-up victory to Nunan.

For Red Cliffs, Sandra Marwood and Jill Gleeson both had 2-up wins, coming against Heidi Schultz and Lee Bottomley respectively, proving how close the final was.

Coomealla captain Kate Murdoch said she was extremely proud of her team for taking out a great contest.

“It was very nice to get the job done,” she said.

“All the matches were really close and they were all competitive but played in good spirits.

“The only slight advantage was the fact Red Cliffs were on their home course but that happens.

“Considering it came down to the last putt in the last game for us to make the final, it was going to be close.

“We’re very lucky we didn’t start until 10.30am so we missed most of the rain, it was more just the wind everyone had to contend with.

“I’m very proud of my team, two of the games were all square after 18 holes, so they went to the 19th hole, it was all close.

“We had two quite strong Coomealla teams this year, they had a lot of good players.

“I’m very, very proud of my team, and all the caddies that came out to support the team it was very much appreciated.”
