Work still to do at Wenty Golf Club

IN April the Wentworth Golf Club returned to competitive play, following countless volunteer hours to bring the course back to life following the 2022 floods.

Club president Glen Walker said the opportunity to get back onto the swing was fantastic.

“Everyone loves getting out there to have a hit and socialise, there’s a lot of camaraderie in the club rooms afterwards,” he said.

“Even once the floods receded we were still recovering, it’s been great to have it back in a playable condition.”

Now, six months on from that milestone, this weekend the club will host a four person Ambrose competition to fundraise for further flood recovery efforts.

“A lot of the electronics on the course suffered corrosion, and there is machinery that requires maintenance from sitting idle for so long.

“The mowers have been knocked around by the rough fairways, and our irrigation system is still suffering from a lot of damage so we’ve had to manually do the watering, and mowing,” Mr Walker said.

“It’s been a big job to get rid of all the silt left over after the river receded, but we’re happy with where we’re at now.”

Mr Walker said he hoped the event this Sunday would not only help raise funds but awareness that the club is up and running.

“Membership numbers are gradually increasing, which is great,” he said.

“We just want to get more people interested in playing regular competitions, and let the world now that there is a golf course over that levy bank.”

As part of the day there’ll be a range of prizes available including a $10,000 hole-in-one purse for the Elders Real Estate eighth hole.
