Junior golf gathers pace

FURTHER investment in junior golf tournaments in Sunraysia is being made, with Robinvale Golf Club next on the hit-list.

Following the inaugural Sunraysia Junior Golf Week 72-hole event last school holidays, promising young golfers will head down the highway to tackle Robinvale’s course on Friday, July 5.

Mildura Golf Resort is also likely to follow suit with a tournament in the September school break, following Riverside, Merbein, Coomealla and Red Cliffs golf clubs all playing part in the previous four-day event.

With a recent spike in junior playing numbers on Murray Darling Golf Association courses and youngsters taking their game seriously, junior events are likely to be on the increase.

Event organiser Garth Doherty of Sunraysia Golf Range said tournaments that require Golf Australia handicaps could help with the development of players.

“For one, it’s getting these young players out and playing other courses they might not be familiar with, but there’s also been a massive surge in kids going from just having some fun in a hit with their mates to actually taking it quite seriously,” he said.

“Playing some of these standalone junior tournaments will hopefully help keep them interested and help develop their golf.

“I think clubs are really making the push to host their own junior tournaments going forward, which will be fantastic.”

The event is open for any player under 18 who holds a Golf Australia handicap.

Entry is $20, which includes competition and lunch on the day as well as a complementary bus service from Robinvale to the range at 8am for a 9.30am shotgun start.

Forms are available from Sunraysia Golf Range.
