Geddes joins hunt for sports star award

SUNRAYSIA golfer Kaylene Geddes’ victory at the Australian Deaf Games in February has given her another award to add to the cabinet.

Geddes, who will compete at an international level following the victory, has been selected as the Northern Mallee Sports Star of the Year for February thanks to her nomination by Red Cliffs Golf Club.

After teeing off at the Waratah Golf Club in New South Wales, Geddes arrived home with two gold medals for the Ambrose event, which she won playing for Victoria, and the ladies’ gross, which was an individual honour.

Geddes also won the net but was ineligible to receive that title as well due to having won the gross.

Her victories were made all the more impressive given that she overcame the last-minute hurdle of not being able to wear a cochlear or hearing aid while playing – the first time she had ever played without one.

As she knows only limited sign language, the change posed a significant barrier to success, but one she was able to conquer.

Geddes will travel to the Gold Coast in August where she will play against golfers from around the globe at the 2024 World Deaf Golf Championships.

As the monthly sports star, Geddes receives a voucher from Intersport Mildura and is now eligible for the 2024 Community Bank Merbein & District 97.9 Triple M Northern Mallee Sports Star of the Year Awards.

She follows January winner Carolyn Coles (lawn bowls) as a nominee for the 2024 Peter Manolas Trophy.

The award is supported by Sunraysia Daily.

Mallee Sports Assembly is now calling for April nominations for the Northern Mallee Sports Star of the Year.

Nomination forms are available from 101-101a Ninth Street in Mildura, or via malleesportsassembly.org.au and for further information phone 5021 3464.
