Red Cliffs Golf Club course impresses visitors

VETERAN South Australian golfers couldn’t believe it was the same Red Cliffs Golf Club they had come to know over the years.

An annual pilgrimage for players from across the border, almost 200 amateur golfers spent time playing across Red Cliffs, Coomealla and Riverside on Monday and Tuesday.

While the latter clubs are in full swing after recovering from the summer floods of 2022, it is the former that is arguably in its best ever condition and presented a welcome surprise for the regular visitors.

Alongside the hard working board, greenkeeper Darren Murnane has earned much of the credit as the work he and offsider Rob Purgar have completed has helped revitalise the club.

Red Cliffs Golf Club’s Mal Goodieson said the South Australian contingent enjoyed their time at the club, with about 100 players taking to the course over both days.

“Some players, who have come from all over SA, had been coming to Red Cliffs for 15 years, and the course wasn’t in great shape before COVID so I think a few thought we might give it one more year,” he said.

“The course is arguably in the best condition now it has been in for some time and it definitely surprised a few of them.

“One guy actually asked me if we had moved another club in on top of the old one.

“And they were blessed with the weather as well.”
