Play set to tee off on restored Wentworth course

COMPETITION golf is set to return to Wentworth Golf Club for the first time since floodwater inundated the course in November 2022.

Following 17 months and thousands of volunteer hours dedicated to restoring the course to its former glory, the NSW club now needs players to come through the door to aid their recovery.

Returning the damaged course to a playable condition has drained the club’s funds. These include not only turf but repairs and maintenance to machinery, irrigation electronics and replacing tee markers, rubbish bins and distance markers that were washed away.

Competition days will return at the venue from this Thursday, April 11.

Wentworth Golf Club president Glen Walker said it has been a long road back, and they need support from golfers, potential sponsors and the community to ensure they can continue.

“After recovering from COVID lockdowns we were just getting back on our feet when we copped the 2022/23 flood which inundated the course for a number of months,” he said.

“When the floodwaters receded, we were faced with the mammoth task of resurrecting what was once a great golf course. It has been a lot of hard work and thousands of hours for our hard-working volunteers to get the course back to a playable state.

“We have a small band of volunteers who have put in thousands of hours of work to restore the course to a playable condition.

“We are desperate to get players out on the picturesque Wentworth Golf Club course and in competition to generate income again and ensure the continued existence of the club.”

The club plays Stableford on Thursdays and Stroke on Sundays, with hire carts and clubs available.

Each day registration is at 9.30am for a 1am tee-off.

“We have a number of fund-raising activities planned including a multi-prize raffle, and we are looking for sponsors to come on board with donated prizes to make it a success,” Walker said.

“We are also looking for more ‘hole sponsors’ and game-day support for prizes and raffles.

“You will always get a friendly welcome and a relaxed game and atmosphere at Wentworth, and the bar is always open on competition days.

“I know we can get the club back up to where we were before the flood, we just need ‘bums on seats’, so to speak.”
