Veterans reign at Riverside

NOT for the first time, two veteran golfers have dominated at the Riverside Golf Club Championships.

It was a seventh and fifth title respectively for Lisa Garioch and Ash Whitehouse, who were both consistently the best across multiple rounds in their divisions.

Garioch, who scored 85, 79 and 87 (251) over three rounds, comprehensively beat runner-up Marg Lampard, who finished on 272.

Garioch said although she was fatigued during the last round on Sunday, she was stoked to take out the championship.

“Every championship is pretty special … (79) was the best score I’ve had in a while, it was the first time I’ve parred the front nine,” she said.

“I’ve parred the back nine quite a few times but I was pretty happy with that.”

While there was plenty of rainfall in Mildura last week, Garioch said Riverside had been fortunate compared to other clubs.

“It wasn’t too bad, we didn’t get as much rain at Riverside as what they got at Coomealla, for instance – they got really flooded,” she said.

“It seemed to go around the golf course, I live in Nichols Point and we got 35mm.

“That’s only five minutes away from the course and they only got around 4mm apparently, so it wasn’t too bad.”

Meanwhile in the men’s, Ash Whitehouse was extremely consistent over his four rounds.

His scores of 71, 71, 75 and 72 (289) easily beat runner-up Brad Steer who finished on 311 strokes.
