Rhodes eyes seniors spot

SUNRAYSIA’S Greg Rhodes is on the cusp of another selection into the Australian senior golf team.

The 64-year-old will look to qualify through Monday’s South Australian Senior Order of Merit at Royal Adelaide, before taking on The Grange & Kooyonga Senior Open Amateur on Thursday and Friday.

Selection would see Rhodes play in the Asia Pacific Championships in Vietnam later this year, before taking part in the Trans Tasman Trophy against New Zealand in February 2024.

Rhodes continues to defy his age, recently hitting an amazing 63 off the stick at Coomealla Golf Club, not long after the flood-affected course reopened.

“It wasn’t a course record but I was 64 when I did it so I guess beating my age is something that I’m happy with,” he said.

“I played pretty solidly with nine pars and nine birdies and a bogey-free round. I managed to birdie three of the last four holes which I enjoyed.”

When asked if he could go one better, Rhodes laughed and said, “I’m getter older”, but added he is still aiming to qualify for the Australia team.

Rhodes is the defending Australian Order of Merit champion, having won the title six times since 2015.

In other golf news, the rescheduled Murray Darling Golf Association District Championships will take place at Red Cliffs Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday, September 9 and 10.

Originally slated for June 17 and 18, the tournament which includes the Champion of Champions event was been pushed back to allow more golfers to return to the flood affected Riverside and Coomealla golf courses.

All club champions and Open winners in scratch and handicap sections will be competing.

Meanwhile the Murray Darling Golf Association Pennant season will begin in October and run for six weeks, finishing in November.
