VETERANS

ON Monday, the prospect of rain dampened the enthusiasm of some golfers as a smaller number than usual travelled to Ouyen to contest the annual “Bricky” Kay Mallee Root 4BBB Stableford championship. In all 28 players participated.

The day turned out to be a typical winters day with cool conditions and some rain. This is a special event in that June is the only month in which a second district event is held.

The Ouyen Golf Club is to be commended for their work in organising and running this popular competition. Ouyen provides a unique opportunity for Sunraysia players to experience sandscrapes. There is quite a technique in raking the sand prior to putting.

The course was in excellent condition with plenty of cover on all the fairways. The day is aptly named because the trophies have been sculptured from mallee roots. Prizes included locally grown produce with plenty of lamb and carrot packs awarded to the best performers.

The winning pair on the day was Deane Munro and Don Hahnel. Ray Pain and Rob Chase had their names added to the list of previous NAGA winners. There was no NTPs as no golfer successfully landed on any of the par three scrapes.

The ladies, once again, provided a homemade lunch and Ouyen members were great hosts at the 19th hole. Thank you to everyone involved. There was a general consensus that the day should be held again next year.
