September move for district champs

MURRAY Darling Golf Association’s District Championships have been postponed until September.

Slated for this weekend at Red Cliffs Golf Club, the tournament which includes the Champion of Champions event, has been pushed back to allow more golfers to return to the recently flood-affected Riverside and Coomealla golf courses.

Association president Greg Rhodes said the district championships were set last December in the wake of the floods, but postponing this weekend’s event would allow more golfers to return to these clubs.

“With the flooded clubs just coming back into operation, especially Coomealla this week, we felt that postponing the district championships would give more golfers a chance to return to these courses,” he said.

“We’ll decide the final date at our next meeting in a few weeks’ time, but at this stage, we’re looking at potentially hosting them at Red Cliffs in the second weekend of September.

“The Riverside and Coomealla Opens are likely to be held in November and the Club Championships maybe even after that, just to give them a chance to present their courses in the best possible light.”

Pennant competition for 2023 also look set to be held across October and November, while the district four-ball competition will take place at Mildura Golf Resort in July.
