VETERANS

IN just five more days the veteran golfers will tee off for their first district round for 2023 at the Mildura Golf Club on Monday, March 6.

The event will be a 4BBB Stableford competition commencing at 9.30am. New and current members are invited. As always registration commences at 8.30am. Look for the registration table at the front of the clubhouse. Pick up your cart from the pro shop (make sure you preorder yours to avoid disappointment).

For just $20 participants receive a game of golf, lunch and the opportunity to win great prizes. So organise your partner and get down their next Monday.

Current members are reminded to wear their badge as there is a prize draw during presentations. New members will be issued with a badge after joining up. Check your GA number online to ensure you are playing with the correct handicap.

Captain Ned will address the field at 9am to run through the local rules before allocating tees for a 9.30am shotgun start.

With the Forty Winks sponsored event there is the added opportunity to win the very generous NARGA, as well as first, second and third prizes along with NTPs.

After presentation there will be a general meeting to inform members about the opportunity to hold a statewide competition in Mildura in 2024.

RED CLIFFS

LAST Wednesday a Medley Stableford was played and Dale Meredith had 39 points to win A Grade and Neville Birch was the runner up with 38 points. In B Grade Thomas Wilkinson had 40 points to win from John Denman on 37 points and Ron Hall had 33 points to win C Grade from Glenys Murray on 32 points.

NTPs: 8th – L. Bottomley and S. Dale; 12th – A. Wood; 15th – J. Gleeson; 17th – J. Riordan.

Stroke was played on Saturday and Aaron Finch won A Grade with 68 net and John Prictor was the runner-up on a countback with 69 net.

Malcolm Blagus won B Grade with 69 net and Ken Upton had 70 net to be runner-up.

In C Grade Ron Hall won with 74 net and Don Fiorillo was runner-up on a countback with 75 net.

Jan Lloyd won the ladies with 72 net and Sue Johns was the runner-up on a countback with 73 net.

NTPs: 8th – Shane Johns and J. Ryan; 9th –M. Forward; 12th –J. McPhee and L. Bottomley; 15th –G. Goodall; 17th –J. McPhee; 18th –N. Birch.

On Sunday Adrian Hensgen had 44 points to win from Shane Dickinson on 39 points.

Balls went to D. Spencer, S. Fox, R. Hawke and M. Goodieson.

MERBEIN

LAST Wednesday was a Stableford event, but with only six players there was no competition. A pleasant game was nevertheless enjoyed by those that did turn up with Jim Piper scoring 37 points and Ken Matulick also had a good day with 34 points.

There were some fine approaches to our par threes, and Ken Matulick landed his drive to 330cm on the 3rd, Max Innes had a put for birdie from 420cm on the 12th and Wayne Innes was the closest on the 16th finishing 392cm from the cup.

Saturday’s competition was a 4BBB Stableford and 12 pairs graced the course with some very respectable scores under the combined handicaps being posted.

Ethan Gray paired with Alan Gourlay to take first place with 45 points. Ethan was on the card 16 out of the 18 holes, so that will have his handicap being looked at.

Runners-up on countback were Paul Mulder and Graeme Dunne with 42 points from the pairings of Kerryn Neindorf and Steve Farley, and Robert Redman and Ken Matulick with both teams finishing on 42 points

NTPs: 3rd Australian Vintage Merbein – Melinda Binding 252cm; 3rd Pigeon Dollars – Melinda Binding; 12th Club Voucher – Ethan Gray 802cm; 16th Merbein Lions Club – Lyn Thompson 277cm.

Today is a Stableford event with tee off from noon; Friday is the twilight event and Saturday is Monthly Medal Stroke.

MILDURA

WINNER of the Veterans Stableford competition on Monday, February 20 was John Hiskins (24) on a countback from runner-up Ken Upton (18) both returning scores of 37 points while third place went to Mark Woodhouse (2) with 36 points.

NTPs: 2nd – Alan Steedman 870cm; 12th – Ken Upton 950cm.

Ladies Tuesday (February 21) 9 hole Stableford event was won by Helen Martin (41) with 14 points.

Ladies Tuesday (February 21) 18 hole Stableford had 30 players in two grades and the A Grade winner was Angela Plumridge (13) with 39 points from runner-up Lee Tracy (23) on 38 points.

B Grade winner was Jan Mierswa (25) with 36 points from runner-up Ruth Rodi (24) on 30 points.

There were seven balls in the ball comp and 31 points on a countback or better collected.

NTPs: 1st Pete’s Pure wine – Ann Bowen 1120cm; 2nd Trentham Estate – Sue Laird 230cm; 10th Trentham Estate – Angela Plumridge 30cm; 12th Zilzie Wines – Angela Plumridge 190cm.

A perfect summer day greeted the 120 players for a Stableford event last Wednesday with scores a little moderate compared to recent weeks.

A Grade winner was Mark Woodhouse (2) with 38 points from runner-up Robert Young (6) with 35 points on a countback with third placed Stephen Smith (10) also on 35 points

B Grade winner was Jack Winslow (11) with 38 points from runner-up Simon Kelly (12) with 37 points on a countback with Andrew Stanbrook (11) also on 37 points.

C Grade winner was John Harvey (20) with 39 points on a countback from runner-up James Pippin (20) also on 39 points. Third place was Anthony Scholes (27) with 36 points.

There were 30 balls in the ball comp and 32 points on a countback or better collected.

NTPs: 1st Pete’s Pure wine – Jamie Lanyon 206cm; 2nd Trentham Estate/PIG – Trevor Rogers 70cm; 10th Trentham Estate – Gary Smart 560cm; 12th Zilzie Wines – George Szentpaly 319cm.

The TWW eagles nest went off with Simon Kelly scoring an eagle two on the 8th hole.

Ladies Friday 18 holes Stableford winner was Valerie Whitelaw (35) with 34 points.

Friday’s medley 9 hole twilight Stableford winner was Boof Ferguson (15) with 18 points on a countback from runner-up Tony Dal Corobbo (28) also on 18 points.

The ball comp had five balls and 17 points on a countback or better collected.

On Saturday a field of 206 players took part in our official opening day Stableford competition for the 2023 season. Thank you to our greens staff and core group of volunteer members for assisting in preparing the course every Saturday morning for competition play.

A Grade winner was Aaron Duck (8) with 40 points on a countback from runner-up Geoff Hazeldine (10) also on 40 points. Third place went to Keegan Blows (10) on 37 points.

B Grade winner was Paul Wright (13) with 40 points from runner-up Josh Fleming (11) with 38 points and third place went to Sam Smythe (14) with 37 points.

C Grade winner was Ron Rowse (20) with 40 points from runner-up Bob Briggs (16) with 39 points and third place went to Barry Waters (17) with 38 points.

D Grade winner was Joel Doherty (31) with a massive score of 47 points from runner-up Aaron O’Reilly (30) with 39 points on a countback from third placed James Pippin (22) also on 39 points.

There were 48 balls in the ball comp and 35 points on a countback or better collected.

NTPs: 1st Pete’s Pure wine – Trevor Spanos 65cm; 2nd Trentham Estate/PIG – Robert Digala 480cm; 10th Trentham Estate – Donald Wall 20cm; 12th Zilzie Wines – Gavin Harrington 154cm.

Sunday was a medley Stableford competition and the winner was Glenda Hiskins (37) with 38 points on a countback from runner-up Chris Grimmer (13) and third placed Greg Love (15) all on 38 points.

There were four balls in the ball comp and 35 points on a countback or better collected.

Green refurbishment has taken place earlier in the week in readiness for our Open tournament on March 31 and April 1 and 2.
