RIVERSIDE 2 upset the previously unbeaten Coomealla in the final round of Murray Darling Golf Association Pennant to set up a rematch in Sunday’s Division 1 Men’s final.
In the final round of Pennant at the picturesque Robinvale Golf Club, the less experienced Riverside outfit held second place on the ladder by defeating Coomealla three matches to two.
Riverside 1 and Red Cliffs were both in with a chance to make the final depending on the other result, and despite the reigning champions Riverside winning 3-2, they could only manage a third-place finish.
The Ladies played next with Coomealla and Riverside Green playing each other for the right to face the undefeated Red Cliffs, who had the bye, in the final. Three of the matches were very close but the final result saw Coomealla progress with a 3.5 to 1.5 win.
In the other ladies contest, Mildura defeated Riverside 5-0 to finish their season on a high.
In the men’s Division 2 competition, Mildura 1 and Red Cliffs were equal leaders prior to the final round with three other teams hoping a win would get them into the final.
Robinvale could have made the final with a win, and some matches that could have gone either way might have helped, but they could only half their contest with Merbein.In the second match Riverside soundly defeated Mildura 2 by four matches to one.
In the final match, Mildura 1 defeated Merbein by 4.5 matches to 0.5. This consolidated them for the final on their home course against Red Cliffs.
In Division 3 Men, Mildura came into the week assured of a finals berth and consolidated their position on top of the ladder with a sound 3.5 to 1.5 win over Coomealla.
The other contest between Red Cliffs and Riverside would decide the other finalist and both fielded strong teams. Red Cliffs won quite convincingly 4-1, so will match up against Mildura on their home course in the final on Sunday.
Matches will start from 9am on Sunday with Division 3 men, followed at 10.45am by Division 2 men, then the Ladies at 11.30am and Division 1 men at 11.15am. Presentations of the flags will follow the contests, normally around four hours after the start time.
The finals should provide some nail-biting finishes and millimetres of putts can make the difference between winning and losing.
