Pennant golf: Pennant returns for spring trial

MURRAY Darling Golf Association Pennant is back after a three-year absence.

Pitting the best golfers in the district against each other in the search for club glory, Sundays over the next two months are set for some quality head-to-head contests.

Usually taking place during the winter months, MDGA is trialing Pennant through the summer, beginning this weekend.

MDGA president Greg Rhodes said the new timeline came about following the most recent

Pennant season in 2019, with COVID restrictions having interrupted the past two potential competitions.

“We found some people were struggling to play in the frost at 8am on a Sunday morning during the winter,” he said.

“They asked to change it to a warmer time, and really October and November was probably the only real time we had before it got too hot.

“So we’re trialing it and hopefully it all goes well. Having been out of action for three years, it will be great to have Pennant back.”

Seven clubs will be represented across one ladies and three men’s divisions over five weeks, before finals on November 20 at Mildura Golf Resort.

Riverside will field two teams in Men’s Division 1, going up against Coomealla and Red Cliffs. Ladies will be the same with the addition of Mildura into the mix.

Merbein, Robinvale and Broken Hill will also compete, each fielding a team in Men’s Division 2.

All head-to-heads will take place at the one club each week, with Coomealla Golf Club holding the opening round.

“We hope it all goes well but we’ll get some feedback afterwards and work on things from there,” Rhodes said.
