Junior academy returns to Riverside

SUNDAY marked the return of the Riverside Golf Club junior academy.

Ten young golfers aged between nine and 12 teed off to start the new academy program to help develop and enhance their skills.

Jason Marks, who is in charge of the club’s junior program, said it was as good a time as any to bring the academy back.

“We have 10 kids aged between nine and 12 working with three coaches in the four-week program,” Marks said.

“It runs Sundays from 10am to 11am at no cost to the kids. They’ll be taught the basics of golf as well as things like course etiquette.

“The plan is after this one that we might try and implement the same thing with the older age group, 13 to 15, and we can run those simultaneously.”

Mark said there were a number of club members who were keen to help develop more juniors.

“We have a few come out with their parents around the course, but we want to try and get them together to learn more of the basics of the game, and hopefully down the track maybe getting them playing junior pennant together like we’ve done in years past,” he said.

“Kids have been locked up at home and, with team sports having struggled through the current climate, golf can be a chance for them to come out with their mates and spend half a day enjoying themselves with no real pressure.”
