Virus bogey hits golf club again

MILDURA Golf Resort has postponed its 2021 championship and will meet other district golf clubs to set a new date.

The championship, which started on Saturday after 20 golfers teed off from 7.30am, was set to see 230 participate over the weekend.

Club manager Nick Cavallo said the announcement of a lockdown at 1pm that same day “created shockwaves”.

“It was devastating when you’re working, rebuilding following the rebuild,” Cavallo said.

The club had planned a busy weekend, with an evening function and an afternoon seminar at the clubhouse. Cavallo said the latest setback was hard to reconcile, but management was focused on planning for a possible reopening on September 2.

Cavallo thanked the golf and social members who had been supporting the club through such a tempestuous time.

“The members were disappointed, a bit frustrated that we’re going into another lockdown, but generally understood,” he said.

Cavallo said the club would look into accessing government support and have minimal staff on the premises to maintain the course. He said the club had already shifted its view to the future anf had a message for the community.

“(We ask people) if they do need to have a function, or some get-together, (such as) a Christmas party, please come forward. Let’s stay positive and plan for these things.

“We’ll be ready to welcome back our golf, social members and guests and really look forward to the future.”
