VETERANS

Once again, due to the COVID-19 outbreaks in rural Victoria, our plans for next month’s event hangs in the balance.

Our single Stableford event on Monday, September 6, falls just outside of the current lockdown and is scheduled for the Robinvale Golf Club.

We will have to wait for a decision by the government as to whether there will be an extension and what travel and sport restrictions might remain.

Any decision to postpone or cancel that round will be made as soon as possible. We will communicate with club representatives when that decision has been made.

So far this year interruptions have been minimal and clubs have been supportive and flexible when the need arises. Let’s hope this good fortune continues for the rest of the year. All we can do is react accordingly to the situation and take advantage of the opportunities as they arise.

Given that we are well into the second half of the fixture and in readiness for a less disruptive 2022 season, the association is already planning a new schedule, reviewing its fee structure and reminding members that we will have a changeover of captaincy in the next few months.

Finally, on a sad note, we learnt that veteran golfer Keith Vale passed recently and the association wishes to extend our condolences to his family.

Until we know more about our next meeting, isolate and keep safe.

MERBEIN

WEDNESDAY was a Stableford won by Lee Bottomley (41) and followed by Glen Wallace (39).

Unfortunately, our club championships were called off shortly after 11am on Saturday.

Please keep an eye on the news and once we’re allowed to play, the second round will be completed. As always, stay safe and we look forward to comp golf restarting soon.

RIVERSIDE

Another shortened week of golf, which this time led to the men’s Club Championships being postponed.

Here’s hoping the state can get the numbers down quickly and bring things back to some sort of normality.

Luckily, the ladies were able to sneak their 27-hole Foursomes Championships in on Thursday, before the lockdown was announced on Saturday.

After the first 18 holes, the placings were:

A Grade: Lisa Garioch and Suzy Conquest (90) won the scratch, with Chitra Rankin and Jenny Leach (93) runners-up.

B Grade: Lyn Delmenico and Jeanette Mason (101) won the scratch  and Verna Wakefield and Gaye Briggs (108) came in second.

Roz Nash and Adel Dal Corobbo (73.5) took out A Grade handicap, followed by Cath Eddie and Kath Ridley (76).

Lyn and Jeanette (with an outstanding 66) won B Grade handicap ahead of Verna and Gaye on (76).

The 27-hole handicap placings were:

A Grade: Roz and Adel (114.5) in front of Janet Luke and Tracey Bryan (119).

B Grade: Lyn and Jeanette (100), followed by Roylene Bailey and Jan Lloyd (116.5).

A very happy pair of Lisa Garioch and Suzy Conquest stood up to the test and were rewarded, being crowned A Grade 27-hole champions again (140). Janet Luke and Tracey Bryan were runners-up (145).

Lyn Delmenico and Janet Mason were the elated champions of the 27-hole B Grade (151), scooping the pool. Second went to Roylene Bailey and Jan Lloyd (164).

Monday’s  Veteran and Friends Stableford drew a very pleasing field and saw the two Graeme’s taking the honours.

Graeme Southwell was on top with 38, followed by Graeme Irvin (37).

Ken Wakefield came away with a lovely eagle on the par-five second hole.

NTPs were: John Fraser (seventh, 630) and Southwell (18th, 85).

The ladies enjoyed par last Tuesday, with the 18-hole comp coming down to a three-way countback, all on plus one. Jan Hiscock took the win, with Dot Knight in second and Lyn Delmenico third.

NTPs were: Lee-Anne Day (fourth, 415), Delmenico (seventh, 900), Maeve Fraser (12th, 43) and June Hensgen (18th, 624).

The nine-hole event also saw a three-waycount back to decide the placings, this time on a plus two. Di Benham was the winner, with Jill Richarson runner-up and Leonie Nott just missing the cut.

Wednesday was Stableford for men, with A Grade going to Damien Arney (39).

Graham Sievewright had an excellent round of 41 to win B Grade, in front of Michael Nott (39), after a countback against Greg Lee.

NTPs were: Wayne Innes (fourth, 91), Damen Southgate (seventh, 220), Jon Slatter (12th, 210), Ned Klemm (17th, 360) and Michael Englefield (18th, 120).

NTP was: Ferdi (12th, 75).

The men’s combined Stableford competition last  Wednesday attracted a big field with 23 pairs on 63 points or better winning golf balls.
