Stephenson, Sargent lead from front

BROKEN Hill’s Jenny Stephenson and Mansfield’s Rod Sargent lead the seeded groups into Friday’s final round of the Shane Doherty Memorial Tri-State Masters.

The week-long masters golf event sees competition across 54 holes over three days, with other social games and events thrown in.

Following Wednesday’s competition at Riverside Golf Club, Stephenson (164) has opened up a solid seven-shot lead over her closest rival, Jenny Jeffreys of Portsea (171). Jodie Deacon of Kooyonga (172) and Donna Sedgman of Mansfield (178) will also play in the seeded groups on Friday at Coomealla Golf Club.

Coomealla’s Craig Tung remains in the hunt for the men’s title, currently on 156, five shots behind Sargent. La Trobe’s Jim James and Ranfurlie’s Chris Aldons (both on 162) make up the rest of the men’s seeded group.

Stephenson and Sargent have led the way since action began on Monday at Mildura Golf Resort. Stephenson scored 81 off the stick on the opening day, already having her lead at seven strokes ahead of Jeffreys and Deacon.

Sargent had an excellent 75 on day one, with Riverside Golf Club duo David Gardiner and Steve Spooner right behind on 76. Tung was next on 78, ahead of James and Mark McPherson of Curlwaa are on 79.

The week has also included social golf, with a 4BBB Stableford in Red Cliffs on Tuesday and an Ambrose in fours at Coomealla on Thursday.

Friday’s competition will conclude with a presentation dinner at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club.
