THE Mildura Jayco Open competition was played over Friday to Sunday. The Friday competition was a nine-hole stableford medley won by Michael Osborne, on countback from Peter Henderson.
On Saturday, April 10, the ladies stroke event was won by Emmalee Beggs with 72 nett, and Sue Laird was second on 73 nett.
The men’s competition was in three grades. A Grade was won by Peter Hartmann (69 nett), with Glenn Marr second on 71 nett. Nigel Ingram scored 71 nett to win B Grade, with Josef Moisidis second on 72 nett. Michael Osborne scored 71 nett to win C Grade, from Stuart Watson on 72 nett.
NTP’s: Second – Sue Laird and Paul Leonard; 10th – Glenn Marr and Emmalee Beggs; 12th – Chitra Rankin and Peter Hartmann.
On Sunday, the ladies stroke was won by Emmalee Beggs (69 nett) and Carla Sherriff scored 74 nett to finish second.
Men’s C Grade was won by Michael Osborne (67 nett) with Kieran Kelly second (70 nett); Timothy Knight won B Grade with 66 nett and David Hancock (70 nett) was second; and Ben Doherty won A Grade and David Murray scored 73 nett for second.

After 36 holes of golf, Emalee Beggs won the ladies handicap (72, 69 – 141 nett) and Carla Sherriff (74, 74 – 148 nett) was second. Sue Laird (74, 83 – 157) was the ladies scratch winner, and Lee Bottomley (74, 83 – 166 was second).C Grade men was won by Stuart Watson (90, 99 -189) and Callum Winslow (97, 93 – 190) was second. B Grade men was won by Timothy Knight (89, 78 – 167) from Josef Moisidis (82, 90 – 172). Aaron Clarke (71, 76 – 147) won A Grade men; with Cameron Stewart (72, 76 – 148) in second place.
The veteran men’s handicap was won by Glenn Marr (146 nett), and the scratch winner was Greg Rhodes (156 gross). The juniors handicap winner was Emmalee Beggs with 141 nett, and the juniors scratch winner was Ben Doherty (168).
Golf events at Mildura Golf Club scheduled for the rest of this week are a mens 4BBB stableford today, ladies 18-hole stableford on Friday, men’s and ladies’ stableford on Saturday, and medley stableford on Sunday. LAST Wednesday, saw Michael Golitschenko win A Grade with 38 points from Jack Budd (37 points) and Mark Woodhouse (36).
B Grade was won by Michael James on 36 points from Paul Modica and Dale Stafford (both 35), while Noah Lanigan claimed C Grade from Ian Walder and Shaun Wakefield, all scoring 37.
Balls went to 20 players from 38 points to 33.

In Saturday’s men’s par event, Trevor Carroll won with 0 from Ross Robertson and Jim Fahey, both on -1. Steve Morrell won B Grade from Jamie Marciano and Walter Schulz, all scoring zero, while
William Forrester took C Grade with +1 from Greg Murphy (+1) and David Tierney (0).
Balls went to 21 players from +1 to -2.

MERBEIN
LAST Wednesday saw a stableford played with Graeme Kerr taking out the day with 34 points over Ken Matulick on 33.
NTP’s: Second – K. Matulick; Third – R. Walder.
Saturday was also a stableford event with both Frank Crouch and Noah Lanigan scoring a solid 39 points. Frank got the spoils due to countback, but once again Noah’s name makes the paper.

RIVERSIDE
On Easter Monday the comp was a medley stableford, which brought with it some great scores. Nic Cairns topped the day with a super 42 points, with runner-up Chris Curley only one behind.
NTP’s: Fourth – Kendall Marchment 425cm; Seventh – Claude Dawson 675cm; 12th – David Lloyd 121cm; 18th – Andrew Woodcock 162cm.
The ladies 18-hole stableford on Tuesday was a winner for Lorraine Palmer, but not before a countback against Dot Knight and Teresa Hagen, all on 32 points. Dot also grabbed the NTP on the 18th – 175cm.
The nine-hole comp had Tracy Lee back in the winners circle, finishing on a very nice 19 points, in front of Marg McIntyre on 17.
NTP’s: Fourth and Seventh – Caroline James 610cm, 750cm.
A stableford for the men on Wednesday drew a countback between Ash Whitehouse and Greg King in A Grade. Both completed a round of 36 points although Ash put in the best back nine to come away a winner.
A terrific score of 40 points from Jimmy Stephen gave him the win in B Grade, from Jack Graham on 38.

In the ladies stableford on Thursday, the A Grade winner, Jen Leac,h played a very pleasing game, completing a round of 42 points, with Lorriane Palmer in second place on 36.
Jen also had a smile from ear to ear after her third shot on the Par five 11th rolled in for an eagle. Excitement plus!
Keeping it in the family, Auntie Margie Dunlop collected the B Grade win, with a lovely 37 points.
Sally Watson was runner-up, after a countback with Cath Eddie, both on 35 points.

Friday’s nine-hole medley stableford was determined by a countback, with Greg Barila coming out the better, in front of Ray Cottle, after both finished on a super 23 points.
The ladies par on Saturday saw Lorraine Palmer showing her consistency, with a winning score of +2.

In the men’s par on Saturday, the score of the week went to A Grader, Brak Zambelli on a massive +6. Second place was also a great score, with Scott Webster shooting a +4.
John Fraser finished on top in B Grade, after his +2, in front of Bob Wagner on +1.
Peter Emmett played out the par five 14th exceptionally well, leaving with an eagle.

A medley stableford on Sunday saw David Whitelegg producing a winning 42 points, over Mick Innes, who picked up second place after a count back against Kendall Marchment, both on 38.

VETERANS
ON Monday, 39 district veteran golfers contested the single stableford event at the Red Cliffs Golf Club.
The day was an ideal Sunraysia Autumn day with a cool start greeting the contestants. As the day progressed it became sunny and warm, ideal for golf.
The A Grade winner was Peter George who scored an excellent 36 points. The runner up with 34 points was John Fraser. In B Grade, Chopper (Robert) Chase proved too good with a 36. Again a score of 34 secured second place for Glenn Butterworth.
The ball winners had to score 31 or more and that required a countback to determine the final recipients.
They were Lorey Rogers, Wayne Innes, Keith Willis, John Williams, Ray Pain, Rod Gray, Boof Ferguson, Bruce Mathieson, Gary Sharman and John Green.
NTP’s: Third – Peter Gilmore; Eighth – Brian Young; 12th – Gary Sharman; 17th – Alan Steedman.
The clubs volunteers are working hard to constantly maintain their course in great condition and the delicious lunch was appreciated after the day’s play.

WENTWORTH
THURSDAY’S stableford event was won by Bill Slee with 38 points, the best score he has had in a long time. Runner up on countback was Garry Bourke.
Ball winners were John Stephens and Annette Green, both with 35 points.

Mr Risky went to Bill Murray with 18.
Sundays stroke round went to straight arrow Col Stewart with 72 nett, followed by the consistent Howard Hankinson on 74.

Saturday, April 24, is the Fred Campbell Memorial two-person Ambrose at Wentworth GC.

Clarke wins Mildura Open

AARON Clarke has been trying to win an Open golf tournament in Sunraysia for years, and now he’s finally broken through at his former club.
Now residing in Ballarat, the former Mildura Golf Resort junior was the winner of the weekend’s Mildura Open.
Clarke, a multiple-time winner of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Golf Championship, had rounds of 71 and 76 to finish with a scratch score of 147.
Cameron Stewart finished second in successive Mildura Opens, just one stroke behind Clarke with rounds of 72 and 76 over 36 holes.
Stewart was runner-up in a dramatic play-off against Greg Rhodes in the 2020 tournament in November.
Broken Hill’s Trinder Josiah finished in third with 148, the same total as Stewart, with Ashley Whitehouse rounding out the top four with 151.
Rhodes, who went into the Open as favourite, surprisingly did not qualify for the seeded draw.
Regular women’s tournament winner Sue Laird added another trophy to her bulging cabinet, winning the ladies’ Open with rounds of 74 and 83. Fellow Coomealla Golf Club member Lee Bottomley was second some nine strokes behind on 166.
Coomealla’s Tim Knight claimed the B Grade men’s title with 167 ahead of Mildura’s Josef Moisidis on 172, while Stuart Watson (Coomealla) won a tight C Grade with 189, just one stroke ahead of Riverside’s Callum Winslow.
Despite not featuring in the seeded draw in A Grade, Rhodes was the Veterans scratch winner with 156, while Coomealla’s Ben Doherty finished with 168 to take out the Junior title.
