MILDURA golfer Sam “Slammer” Smythe said placing sixth at the All-Abilities Riversdale Cup in Mount Waverley was a turning point in his career.
“The weekend was really great … it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in the game,” Smythe said.
“And the facility was absolutely first class … it blew me away.
“The fairways were like walking on carpet and the greens were extremely fast.
“It was a fantastic experience and hopefully I can come back next year and do even better.”
The cup was Smythe’s first time competing at this level.
“I did better than I expected,” he said.
“The tournament taught me you have to be on your A-game from the first hole.
“My short game was pretty good over the weekend and so was my putting.
“I’m going to go back to the driving range, work on what I need to work on.
“My dad Bruce Smythe drove me down there, walked 36 holes with me and he was great support.
“I got heaps of support on Facebook too so the Sunraysia community really got behind me.”
