Red Cliffs’ Daryl Morgan wins Mildura Golf Open

RED Cliffs Golf Club’s Daryl Morgan claimed the weekend’s Mildura Golf Resort Open by three shots over Coomealla’s Justin McPhee and Ballarat’s Aaron Clarke.

Morgan carded 70 on Saturday in difficult conditions with the temperature reaching the mid-40s, bested only by Mildura’s Cameron Stewart who had a brilliant 69.

Clarke had 72 to sit third, with McPhee and Mildura’s Joe Morello a shot back.

But while Stewart’s second round 82 put him out of contention, while Morgan and McPhee both carded 72s and Clarke had 73 to leave Morgan on 142 and three clear of his nearest competitors.

“There’s been some good golf played in the last few opens, I probably haven’t been playing my best in the last few — I’ve been struggling a little bit particularly with my short game,” Morgan said.

“I found a bit of rhythm on Saturday and Sunday so it was good, my short game was solid so I’m happy with that.”

Ballarat’s Joel Antsis (78 and 71) and Morello (73 and 76) rounded out the top five with Stewart sixth.

Broken Hill’s Jennifer Stephenson’s 167 (79 and 88) had her victorious in the ladies championship from Mildura’s Mabel Crouch on 182 (90 and 92) and Riverside’s Stephanie Baker 183 (95 and 88).
