Laird wins Red Cliffs Golf Club Open

COOMEALLA’s Sue Laird has taken out a second golf open of the season after a sudden-death playoff win at Red Cliffs on Sunday.

Laird was the overnight leader after day one, carding 83 on Saturday, before shooting 81 in the second round.

Riverside’s Lisa Garioch charged home to force a playoff, coming in with 79 on Sunday after 85 on Saturday.

But Laird, who also plays pennant in Melbourne with Commonwealth Golf Club, held her nerve and won on the first playoff hole to back up her Coomealla Open from the previous weekend to make it two from two in opens since the resumption of competitive golf in the district.

In the men’s A grade Brendan Rowse finished with 71 and 72 to take out the men’s A grade, with Riverside’s Craig Jervis runner-up with 78 and 82.

The B grade winner was Red Cliffs’ Neville Birch with 82 and 84 from Mildura’s Craig Jukes 85 and 88.

C Grade winner was Jason Cox 93 and 98 from Dylan Burnett 94 and 100.

Red Cliffs Golf Club match committee member Deb Hassell said the course played particularly tough over the two days, with a playing conditions calculation of plus one on Saturday and plus three on Sunday based on scores submitted.

“We can blame that on the grass, it’s been ideal growing conditions and the ground staff have struggled to keep up with it,” Hassell said.

“It’s literally growing before your eyes.”

The next of the district’s open events will be Merbein on November 21-22
