BRENDON Garlet produced a round of 73 net to win last Wednesday’s A Grade competition at the Coomealla Golf Club.
Just one behind in second position was Ivan McKenzie, defeating David Porter on a countback.
NTPs were: Troy Neville (third, 715), McKenzie seventh, 506, and 11th 422), Kaylene Geddes (62) and Bryan James (18th 250).
Last Friday’s medley nine-hole Stableford was closely contested with Gary Thomas finishing just ahead of Clinton Leavold.
Thomas finished with 20 points, a point ahead of Leavold.
NTPs were: Walter Schultz (11th, 800) and Barry Waters (18th, 900).
Saturday men’s A Grade winner was Thorell Lees (36). Runner-up was Mark Hann (36) on countback from Hugo Haring.
NTPs were: Sue Laird (third, 120), Ben Pitt (seventh,295) and Robyn Hand (400), Joe Morello (11th,291) and Lynda Saunders (50) and David Martin (18th, 60).
Sunday’s medley Stableford winner was Mark Johns (35), just ahead of Bryan James (34).
NTP: 7th Tim O’Neill 185cm
WENTWORTH
THURSDAY’S Stableford event was won by Howard Hankinson with 38 points. Runner-up went to the Phantom, Glen Walker, on 31.
NTP was: Ron Moore (second, 1050). Mr Risky to wily Bill Murray (24).
Sunday’s stroke was played in very bleak weather with Damian Fairley producing his first win at the club, but it won’t be his last. Damian scored 72 net. The runner-up was Garry Bourke (73) from Bill Slee (also 73).
NTP was: Howard Hankinson (17th, 600). Mr Risky was again the Phantom with 84.
Coming events: Saturday: Working bee starting at 9am at the shed laying new grass around the 16th green. Monday, September 7, is the club’s AGM.
VETERANS
THE next proposed round for veteran golfers was to be a single Sableford game hosted by the Robinvale Golf Club.
With travel restrictions, social distancing requirements, cart rental limitations, compulsory face masks and a limit of two players per group that event was not going to be the same great day that we normally experience.
The final straw came when golf clubs were instructed by authorities that they cannot conduct competitions.
During the lockdown golf is to be considered as exercise. Therefore it’s not entirely surprising when I inform you that the event has been cancelled.
We will have to be content to know that the October event scheduled to be held at Merbein will occur when this current lockdown period has ended.
As the message goes “we are all this in this together” seems to mean that our contribution towards controlling the COVID-19 outbreaks will be to have patience by delaying the restart of district competitions until things stabilise.
Meanwhile, take the chance to enjoy some regular exercise at your district course.
Remember, there is no such thing as bad games of golf – just poor scores.
Get out for some fresh air, alleviate stress and contribute positively to good mental wellbeing.
We will continue to monitor the situation, seek advice and responded to government requirements before we decide if the October game will go ahead.
