VETERANS

IF the year had panned out as anticipated today’s report would be recording the results of this year’s championship round.

Our champions would be announced and we would be looking forward to our next round.

Instead we have to patiently wait for better Covid-19 outcomes that would allow the government to consider lifting restrictions.

With the current spike in the level of infections that could realistically be some time yet.

The best we can manage in the foreseeable short term is that our association conducts events under the same conditions as our local clubs.

There are many successful examples.

Local clubs are conducting veteran competitions with good sized fields.

Players and clubs have adapted to the new requirements by implementing changes inline with social distancing rules.

If we are to restart our comp then we may have to accept that we have an allocated tee off time.

Registrations would need to be spaced out and we would comply with all current requirements. That will possibly mean no presentations on the day.

What we will enjoy is a chance to play at another course, compete against a wider range of players and still socialise with other golfers in a responsible and safe environment. Arrangements regarding food and drinks will need to be finalised with each host club. A bit of creative thinking could make nearest the pins possible and hygiene measures will ensure the safety of players.

Let’s hope that all the pieces come together to allow for us to finally restart our competition.
