RIVERSIDE

THE chill of winter has certainly come to visit us over the past few days.

But I’m sure all the keen golfers who have missed so much time on the fairways this year won’t let the cold weather keep them away.

Monday’s Veteran and Friends competition was a great day for John Fraser his 36pts enough to get the win, over Kevin Eastwood on 34pts.

The ladies played Par on Friday, Verna Wakefield putting together a great score of plus two to defeat Dot Knight on square.

There was also a 9 hole Stableford on Tuesday, Cath Kent coming out on top with 19pts in front of Carol Benning on 18pts.

Wednesday the men contested their Monthly Award in two grades.

Lachlan Inglis was the winner with (91/70) of the Monthly Award, but not before a battle with Chris Curley, who also had an amazing day, finishing on (87/70) and grabbing the A Grade win.

Runner up in A Grade was Andrew Forbes (Mildura) on (88/72).

In B Grade Michael Nott played a great back nine (105/77), Ray Cottle snaring second place (97/77) and Ken Hornsby just missing the cut on (98/77).

Linda Young, our ladies captain, will be sadly missed come the end of July, as Linda and her husband Cliff, will be heading off to live in South Australia, to be closer to family.

But one thing is certain, Linda will make the very most of her remaining weeks at Riverside, as she did in Thursday’s Stableford, leaving with the score of the day (35pts), after a countback with Janet Luke.

Not to be left out, Janet came away with the A Grade win, followed by Dot Knight, just one behind on 34pts.

It was B Grade that things got a little tight. With five ladies determined to get into that winners circle. But, Anne Parker, who continues to amaze us all, once again landed the top spot (34pts). Runner up went the way of Liz Wallace and Ayse Jewitt, Gaye Briggs and Maeve Fraser had to sit back and wonder what could have been.

Friday’s 9 hole Medley Stableford was won with a score of 20pts by Martin Dane from Ken Wakefield on (19pts).

Tracey Bryan has been hanging out for a win and Saturday was the day.

The Stableford competition, the weather, company or maybe her swing was right on target, but an excellent 39pts certainly did it for her.

The young Anne Parker threw her hat in the ring once again, finishing with a really lovely 38pts to take second place.

The men’s Stableford on Saturday was in two grades and a nice 37pts from Wayne Innes gave him the honors in A Grade.

With count back being the flavour of the week, four players were up against it for runner up and Gary Sharman was the lucky one.

He was followed by Joseph Morello (Mildura), Ned Klemm and Grant Giddings all on 36pts.

Rob Arnold was the eventual winner in B Grade after he and Stef Pulmer (Beachport) came in with 35pts.

Sunday’s Medley Stableford was no different with another count back having to be deciphered. Kendall Marchment was determined the winner, Wayne Sievewright took out second and Kevin Aston was pipped at the post, all on 35pts.

Coming events: Today men’s Stableford, Thursday ladies Par, Friday medley 9 hole Stableford (all day play), Saturday ladies Stableford, men’s Stableford, Sunday Medley Stableford.

VETERANS

WITH the winding back of COVID-19 restrictions on the weekend our scheduled championship round has been postponed.

After consulting with committee members this decision was reluctantly made.

It was expected changes scheduled for last Monday would mean that food and drinks would be available and that up to fifty players could compete.

With that no longer being the case the event would not meet the goals of providing district players with the opportunity to socialise and compete against each other.

It is important to remember that these restrictions are in place to ensure that we provide safe and healthy conditions for our members.

Many would be classified as being in the high risk category group.

The championship round will now be held at the next Riverside event in November. That will also remain the AGM round.

It does allow for players to gain eligibility by playing the required two rounds before then.

The next event will now hopefully be the Ouyen game planned for July 20.

This will depend on negotiations with the club over the next few weeks and after consultation with committee members.

Make sure your committee representative knows your views.

I will keep members informed over the next few weeks.

If that does not eventuate then we will have to be patient and plan for the Red Cliffs round in August.

In the meantime players can continue to support their local clubs by playing in their weekly veteran events. We can only keep our fingers crossed. Until then happy golfing.
